Life as of late...

Well, my life has been consumed by three things... my job (ever interesting), drumline (of course!), and my pregnant wife (things are starting to become VERY real!) We found out at her last appointment that we are having a BOY! We didn't want it to be a secret or a surprise. I don't think that either of us deal too well with surprises. Anyway...now the only thing we have to do is agree on a name for our son. You see, if we found out we were having a girl, the good thing would be that we at least can agree on a girl's name, but we are in a heated disagreement on what we should name our son. I want the names Jerome, Jameson, or James... she wants the names Jude, Jace, or Jason... hmmm... we can't agree. We are going to give him the middle name Alan, after my father, but the first name is still a mystery. I guess we still have time to decide, but everything is moving FAST!

The baby furniture is still in the garage... we need to paint the bedroom yet and then move the furniture upstairs. I was able to get some very nice used furniture from a colleague of mine whose kids have outgrown it. We also gave our friend Erica some of our spare bedroom furniture to make space for the baby's "stuff".

<--Here is our son saying, "Hello!" Well, waving it, rather...

Band season is almost over (Next week M-burg goes to ACCs, they won their chapter and will hopefully make a good push to the end!), but indoor is just beginning and that means it's time to write some cymbal parts! I am looking over the music and starting to get some ideas. I am excited about the show this year. The music is GREAT!

As for school... well, school is school. The renovations at Red Land have come along nicely. The kids have been great, for the most part. I am looking forward to getting the construction crews out of there, but everyone has dealt nicely.

Bye for now.

Belle & Sebastian Write About Love

The first 5 days...

So, it is now the fifth day being back at Red Land for the new school year. So far, things are still mighty hectic around here in regards to the various renovation projects being undertaken, but surprisingly, the students have been very resilient and have "rolled with the punches." I am teaching seniors once again and find that I enjoy teaching this grade level and course more and more. I hope that it is a course in which my boss will allow me to teach for many years to come. I seem to feel that I am improving each year, which is definitely good. I feel more at home here, now, it being my fourth full year on this staff. I have a little more Red Land pride, now. My new classroom is great, although there are a few minor set-backs. For one, there are no blinds on the windows (I know, not that big of a deal, but it makes trying to project something on the screen a lot tougher than you might think). Also, for whatever reason, none of my posters will stay up on my walls. I have now used duct tape on EVERYTHING to try and make it stick, and even some of that is not working. I hope to find a solution to this problem. Any suggestions??? All in all, things are not too bad, I must say. I am hopeful for a quick, but enjoyable school year.

Drum Corps in 2010....

It's amazing how so much changes when you are not involved in an activity for a few years... yet, so much remains the same. In this case, I'm talking about drum corps, an activity that while I am still a HUGE fan of, have not actively been a part of since 2006 and have not eagerly followed (on a day-to-day) basis since 2007. Jen and I went to DCI Eastern Classic (or Regional or whatever) in Allentown last night. It is amazing how things have changed. The use of samplers and synth has not necessarily taken over like some drum corps purest might think, but has actually improved and, in some cases, has been integrated near seamlessly into the shows (ie: just check out the 2010 Bluecoats!) The fan base seems to be more diverse (I saw a TON of young kids at their first ever show) and yet old faces return for more. Jen and I sat next to an elderly couple who claimed to be attending their first drum and bugle corps show since the late 1970s! Jen and I had to fill them in on the current status of now-defunct corps such as The Yankee Rebels and The Hawthorne Muchachos. Also, a short lecture on the difference between All-Age Corps (such as DCA) and DCI was needed as a refresher for these folks, as the gentlemen was wondering why the Hawthorne Caballeros weren't at the show. He remembered the Westshoremen of old, as well, and I explained that probably at a few of those shows in the late 70's he may have seen my parents perform.

In the bottom half we saw some of the corps that are fighting for the lower rankings and just hoping to be top 17 come quarterfinals in Indy. Corps like Jersey Surf, Teal Sound (which, surprisingly did an all Dream Theater music themed show), Mandarins, and Pacific Crest are all fairly recent additions to the World Class level and are still struggling to compete with the "big boys". But also in this grouping we have a couple corps that are familiar faces in the top 12 of old that have fallen a bit, such as the Crossmen (now from San Antonio) and even the Madison Scouts who were big and loud and exciting (and in some cases bad), but still have the loyalty of the fans. When scores were announced and it was seen that Madison Scouts actually dropped a placement from where they came into the show, the crowed booed and awed as if on cue. Somethings never change.

In the top half, the Blue Knights, performing an all classical show, had a great performance and elevated them past the strikingly opposite Madison Scouts. Then came the contenders. The Bosotn Crusaders, celebrating their 70th anniversary, performed a show theme that focused on a king or kingdom or something like that...but never really reached me. They were clean and safe and not all that exciting. Santa Clara Vanguard performed music by composer Bela Bartok infused with a frenzy of modernism and complex drill that was never quite clean. The Phantom Regiment, another fan favorite of folks in Allentown (apparently...they got a loud ovation), performed great musically, but left me wanting more...they were flat and not as exciting as the two corps to come. Now the big boys, these two corps are destined for the top 5. The Cadets performed their show about toy soldiers coming to life in a young boy's imagination. This show as by far the most theatrical and made use of a constant character present in the show and some vocal sampling in the pit. The drill was exciting, but it seemed that nothing especially popped out as a big WOW moment like in most Cadets' shows. The music was great, too, pulling from classical and band music as well as classic drum corps favorites (Russian Sailor's Dance!). The Bluecoats were last on to compete and they raised the bar. This is by far the greatest Bluecoats corps to ever take the field. As an alumni I was simultaneously proud and jealous. Haha. They performed a show entitled Metropolis that definitely borrowed some of its look and theme from the classic 1920's silent film of the same name (directed by Fritz Lang....check it out!) The show is modern and complex and showcases constant movement and music. The visual, which has been a lacking factor in Bluecoats' shows of the past, is vastly improved and effective. The drumline was INSANELY good. I could see this as the year the Bluecoats finally win a caption (maybe even more than one!) at finals.

MASH Drumline

Well, if it hasn't sunk in yet, it will today. Marching band season is upon me once again. Today starts Mechanicsburg's drumline mini-camp. I am pumped and I hope the students are, as well. I think things can go very well this year if all their heads are in the game. I am not sure what the status of the rest of the band is at this point, but the drumline seems promising. They need kick into high gear, though, this week and learn the music. I hope the weather cooperates.

Summer 2010....so far.

Been a long time since I wrote here...

Summer vacation is quickly approaching its finale for me. August already. In a matter of a couple weeks, I'll be back to the grind of being a teacher. As much as I hate the though of it all, it is honestly a good thing. I get lazy when I don't have a regimented structure to follow.

So, the summer so far has been pretty fantastic. Jenny and I spent 9 days on the road. Our road trip took us to many new places. We drove 3,826 miles in all, went through 16 different states, and 3 time zones. We had a blast, really! I never once got sick of all the driving and was really upset when the 9 day trip came to an end. Jen was more excited to be home than I was.

Tessie has grown, and now that we have had her for a year, it's amazing to think that last summer at this time I was loosing my mind while trying to train a hyper active puppy. She is much calmer now and has been a good pet. She's staring at me sort of cock-eyed as I type this... she must know that I am writing about her.

I am working on an online course right now through Teacher Education Institute and Carlow University. The class is about improving student literacy skills. I start a second course in a few days (Aug 10, to be exact) and the two will overlap. I hope to be finished with both of them by October-November.

I was fixated on the World Cup, while it was on, but now there is nothing of interest in the sports world to me. The Red Sox have been somewhat depressing this summer, and having the Yankees in first place just makes matters worse. Blah...

Well... my summer goes on, too quickly, but I suppose that's the way things go. I hope to have some big news in the future to post... something more interesting then all of this, haha. Stay tuned.

Big deal...(sarcasm)

So... Liverpool beat Debrecen in Champions League today... barely. I don't understand why Liverpool's showing on the European stage has been so embarrasing this year... just more disappointment carrying over onto the larger stage. At least Lyon lost too... Other Primeir League clubs fared well today, too. Here's a nice picture from the game... looks like Johnson got a bit of the dude's face...????

Guest Speaker

I have a guest speaker in today to talk to my senior students. They aren't being as receptive as I had hoped or thought they would be. Ugh... it makes for a less than super day. The second class was much more attentive than the first... I hope the third class is more like the second. We'll see....

"Been a long time since I rock and rolled..."

I guess I just haven't had much to say. The school year has been in full swing now and between that and marching band and the dog my life has been hectic, to say the least. Things are going well though. Today has been an easy day at school. The kids are just taking a test and doing some silent reading for their book report assignment. I am actually very pleased to see how many of my students are attempting some classic novels. I am glad that many of them are up for the challenge. Anyway, since it has been a day where my involvement is at a minimum, I have had time to plan out the possible road trip that Jen and I might go on this summer. Here is a map showing the planned route of travel...

I'll post more about trip plans as they come to fruition.

Washburn's Top 5

I haven't done one of these for awhile, and they're fun... so here we go...

Washburn's Top 5 of the Day: The Top 5 Most BadAss Female Characters in Film...

First off, this was a tough list to make... some honorable mentions that didn't make my top 5 are Linda Carter as Wonder Woman, Ziyi Zhang as Xiao Mei (in House of Flying Daggers), Rob Zombies girlfriend who played Baby Firefly in The Devil's Rejects, Angelina Jolie as the Tomb Raider Lara Croft, Carrie-Ann Moss as th
e Matrix's leading lady Trinity, and one of my all time favorites, Anne Parillaud as Nikita in LaFemme Nikita...sorry ladies... but here are the ones that did make my list...

5) Mallory Knox
- Coming in at number 5 is the infamous, notorious mass-murderer Mallory Knox played by Juliette Lewis in the 1994 film, Natural Born Killers. Very rarely in films are villains so evil yet so lovable at the same time. Mallory Knox is a psychopathic murderer who, along with her husband, Mickey, racked up an impressive body count as they drove up and down highway 666 and terrorized small-town American towns. How can anyone forget the opening sequence when Mallory displays her sex appeal, her ability to fain innocence, and her natural ability to kill so effectively. She curtly seduces a man at a diner bar and leads him on to dance with her, all the while, her hubby is sitting at the bar waiting for the right moment to join in. As the unsuspecting victim gets more and more forward with Mallory, that is when the action begins. She spouts out in her hillbilly accent, "Are you flirtin with me???" and before you know it she socks the guy square in the jaw and continues the beat down until things really get bloody. View the clip below to see the opening sequence of Natural Born Killers and admire Mallory Knox's badassness. You don't want to mess with this little lady. Probably the only reason she isn't higher in the rankings is because she is only one part of a tandum.

4) Yu Shu Lien - played by the dynamic Michelle Yeoh is the heroine character from 2001's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She is a kung-fu master who, along with her partner, a Wu-Dan Master, Li Mu Bai, have attained the status of warrior legends. She is in the influence on a young girl to follow in her footsteps as a warrior, but the girl is mixed up and goes about attaining enligtenment through trecherous methods. She is eptime of discipline and calm in the movie. Her martial arts skills are so smooth and dance-like. She can literally run on air and at one point, she catches a blow dart out of mid-air. Pretty sweet moves. I wouldn't want to tangle with her. Check out her first encounter with the trecherous girl who has stolen Li Mu Bai's sword. Not only does she have some kick-ass moves and one-liners, "Get down here!", the background music is also sweet. Taiko Drums....

3) Sarah Connor - Not the Sarah Connor from the first Terminator, more the Sarah Connor from the sequel. Played with total conviction by Linda Hamilton, she is number 3 on the list. She's been locked up in an asylum, removed from her son's life, and no one will believe her that there is an indestructable robot from the future out to get her and her son. She's pissed, to say the least. When she finally gets out of the asylum, with the help of her son, John, and a revamped, good-guy Arnie, she is ready to kick some ass. A couple of the scenes in the mental asylum give us glimpses of Sarah's potential to be a total badass chick, but she really gets going when she decides to go on a one-woman assassination mission and kill the guy she feels is responsible for Judgement-Day (in the future). She nearly gives in to her killing side. This cool video, that someone made, is a little music video of kickass clips of Sarah Connor from T2. Enjoy!!!

2) Beatrix Kiddo (AKA The Bride, AKA Black Mamba) - is the heroine and main character in the Kill Bill movies. She kicks so much ass throughout these two movies, that is hard to pinpoint her best badass moment, but after some thought, it has to be the scene in Volume 1 when she takes on the entire Crazy 88s, a masked kung-fu gang of thugs and killers that works for fellow former assassin in the Deadly Viper Squad, O-Ren Ishii (AKA Cottonmouth). She not only enacts her revenge in a systematic fashion, but does it in bloody, Tarantino glory. Uma Thurman displays an uncanny ability in her battle with the Crazy 88 to take on an entire army of badies and easily (and bloddily) dispatch of them. It's an iconic scene for women wanting to kick ass everywhere. Here is the clip below!

And the number 1 Badass chick in movies...
Lt. Ellen Ripley -
from Alien, Aliens, Alien3, and Alien: Resurrection. Not only is she one of film's greatest survivor characters, but she kicks a ton of ass along the way. No where is this more apperant than in the final 30 minutes of Aliens, the second film in the series. Ripley, after most of her crew is totally wiped out, takes it upon herself to rescue a little girl from the clutches of the evil Alien monsters, and more importantly, the Queen Bee. In this part of the movie, Ripley becomes a one-woman wrecking crew, combining a flam-thrower, machine gun, and grenade launcher into one weapon and stepping confidently amidst the egg pods being layed by the GIANT Queen alien. Ripley is not to be messed with this time around. The fight continues, even after she thinks she has safely rescued the little girl. Back on her space ship, she must then battle the Queen women to women. The famous line, "Get away from her, you BITCH!" is screamed as Ripley beats the Queen and blasts her out of an air lock. Total badass. Here's a scene from Aliens. Enjoy!
